Jazz are embarrassed by Houston Rockets – 4/7/10

// April 7th, 2010 // 4 Comments » // Game Summary

I feel the need to warn you.  I’m not in the greatest of moods after seeing the Jazz get destroyed by the lowly Rockets tonight.  This post could be a little, um, critical.  Ok, I’ll be honest: this will likely be my most cynical column yet.  I feel the need to vent and I will do so here.  So if you want a warm fuzzy feeling then go here.

I knew that the Jazz were going to be a little tired after playing an intense game last night but nothing prepared me for the utter lack of effort the Jazz showed up with.

Was the entire Jazz team not aware that there are only 3 games left in the season and our position as #2 in the West would only last if they won the game?  Showing up was not enough.  And with Phoenix, Denver, and Dallas all winning tonight, our perch at #2 was short-lived…again.

As of late, the Rockets have been a terrible defensive team. They’ve given up more than 110 points in 3 of their last 5 games.  In fact, the last meeting between the Jazz and Rockets the Jazz scored 133 on their way to an easy victory.

Would it kill Carlos Boozer to try and disrupt a shot or even try for some blocks?  I mean, HONESTLY!  There is no one in the league with worse help defense.  When you can hear what the players are saying on the court you can always hear Booze barking little commands to other Jazzmen.  That could be a good thing if it weren’t while Boozer was standing there with his hands at his sides allowing the opposing team to give him a wedgie while scoring easily.

Deron Williams was definitely off.  He pushed harder last night than I’ve ever seen him play but he was not getting it done very well tonight.  It didn’t help that he constantly was guarding Aaron Brooks who is significantly faster than DWill.  Why did Sloan not go w/ a smaller lineup to deal with the Rockets fast guards?  WHO THE HELL KNOWS.

When their guard rotation is Kevin Martin, Aaron Brooks, and Kyle Lowry-all of whom are under 6’4-it would do well to either exploit those matchups like crazy on offense.  Since the Jazz couldn’t do that, at the very least they should have put in Price or Gaines to guard some of those smaller faster guys.  But, Sloan couldn’t be bothered by such things and remained his old stubborn ass-self.

Fesenko missed yet another game for the most BS reason: sore throat and migraines.  I cannot count how many games he has missed for ingrown hairs, tummy aches, sore throats, headaches, and who the hell knows what else!  Can you not give the kid some pills?  Some Halls lozenges and and a freakin’ oxycotin would have solved his problems tonight!  Why do I get the feeling that all his “injuries” are just synonyms for “hangover.”  Give me a break!

Why, in the name of all that is holy, can Kyle Korver not dribble a basketball?  He knows he’s a professional basketball player right?  He can only catch and shoot?  The only times I’ve seen him catch and then do something else, it either ends up in a travel or 3 or 4 dribbles and then an awkward pass.  If he worked on the rest of his game as much as he works on his shooting he’d be incredible.  But no, apparently he is fine NOT expanding his game.

Why can Ronnie Price NOT shoot the basketball well?  He, amazingly, went 4 for 6 tonight from the field but on the season he’s putting up an incredible 29% from 3 point range and under 40% from the field.

Ugh, just 3 games remain, and 2 on the road.  The Hornets are up next.  Thankfully, they’ve been a train wreck lately and Chris Paul is out for the rest of the season with a mysterious thumb injury.  However, that sounds like just the recipe for the Jazz to not show up again and lose to a bad Hornets team.

Ok, my rant is done.  I love the Jazz but can’t stand it when there is a lack of effort.  If you just get outplayed by a better team, that’s another story.  Sadly, this was not the case tonight.

Jazz crush the Wizards…like it wasn’t even close – 3/15/10

// March 17th, 2010 // No Comments » // Game Summary

This game lasted for 1 quarter.  Then during the 2nd the Jazz blew it open to an 11 point lead at halftime.  During the 3rd quarter the lead increased to 20+ points and flirted with 30+ points until the 3rd strings came in.

This was a welcome game after playing 4 games in 6 days especially after the physical game against OKC.  Okur returned to the lineup while AK sat out nursing his strained calf.  He scored in double figures as did Gaines, Millsap, Boozer, Williams, Matthews, & Korver.

The Wizards have noticeably checked out this year.  After losing Gilbert Arenas to a felony-related season long suspension and the trades of Jamison and Butler, they are done.  Their drive for winning has gone out the door with it.  They don’t have a lot of promising young players and will need to rely heavily on the upcoming draft and then free agency to become competitive again.

Some interesting things to note

Kyle Korver leads the NBA in 3PT percentage this season at 57%.  2nd place is Mike Miller from the Wizards at 50%.  Korver has missed a lot of games so it stands to reason that his high percentage is caused by the fact that he has taken fewer 3 pointers (79) than every other player in the top-40 percentage leaders.  However in the past month, Korvers 3PT percentage has only dropped by about 4% which is pretty incredible since he has been getting extended playing time in that stretch.

The Jazz missed 14 of their 35 free throws…at home.  Has Jerry Sloan ever talked to the team about free throws?  Do they have a free throw coach?  If they don’t, it’s about freakin time they got one!  Geez, there’s no reason we should be this bad.

Sundiata Gaines posted some career highs in minutes played and points (15).  It was nice to finally get a chance to see him run the point for longer than 2 minutes.  He shot the ball well: 6 of 7 from the field, 2 for 3 from downtown but only 1 of 3 from the foul line.  He looked promising in his stints of extended minutes but still not enough to get a real feel for what he is like as a player.  Sadly, Ronnie Price looks to be back from injury this week so we may not see much more of Gaines.

For the Fesenko lovers: I have heard a lot of people clamoring for more Fes to be getting more time.  There are times that I feel the same way.  In the Washington game, he played only 15 minutes and accrued 5 fouls.  Over the season, he averages a foul every 5 minutes.  Meaning if he was getting more than just scrub minutes, he’d be fouling out almost every game….after only about 20 minutes.  I like Fes a lot but given his insane foul rate and his 42% FT percentage, he’s not really making the team any better when he’s on the floor.  Just some thoughts.

Jerry Sloan’s style of basketball

// January 5th, 2010 // No Comments » // Coaching Staff

My friends and I have coined a phrase we call “Sloan Ball.”  Jerry Sloan is a “My Way or the Highway” type coach…and, I suspect, person too.  He doesn’t put up with the players’ crap.  The Jazz play his style of basketball and if you don’t play it then you’re in his doghouse.  As a Jazzman, you don’t necessarily have to play well to stay in Sloan’s rotation, you just have to do it his way. His way involves running the plays he calls, making your screens, helping your teammates get open shots, not taking contested jumpers, making the right cuts on offense, making the right rotations on defense, playing physical without fouling, staying on top of defensive assignments, etc. (continued…)

Jerry Sloan Jerry Sloans style of basketball

Take a look at Matt Harpring, as much as I love Harp it has been a couple years since he was truly effective.  Yet, he brought the one thing that Sloan wants: hustle.  Sloan continued to give Harpring minutes well into last season even after all of his numbers declined.  Another example is Jarron Collins.  We like to call him Cash Money Collins because his elbow jumper was the Cash Money.  Actually not really, he was pretty terrible all around and continually ranked in the bottom 5 of all NBA centers.  Yet, Sloan loved him.  Had the Jazz been financially able they would have kept him around as long as possible because, apparently, he hustled a lot in practice.  As a fan, we don’t get to see those kinds of practices so we can only imagine how much the Cash Money really hustled.  Personally, I doubt he did much.  However, what can’t be denied is the amount of playing time Collins got when he was healthy, much to the anger of Jazz fans.

Take a look at the other end of the spectrum: Sloan’s doghouse. Remember how we got the 3rd pick of the ’05 draft and drafted a talented young PG out of Illinois?  The Jazz were seriously lacking at that position and felt that they had the perfect guard to turn into a franchise player.  Then the season started and Sloan was starting, none other than, Keith Macleod (who was awful and is now out of the league).  Deron Williams recently talked about how tough it was his rookie year.  He talked about playing only a minute or two in some games, getting 30 in others, and starting a couple of other games.  He was in the dreaded Sloan doghouse.  DWill probably thought he was pretty hot stuff and came into the team thinking he would be the king and Sloan put him in his place.  Williams figured things out and now Sloan trusts him enough to have him call the plays on many possessions.  That’s quite the swing.

Kyrylo Fesenko got into that position for much of last season.  He showed up to camp having put on more weight, dyed the tips of his hair blond, and apparently not taking basketball seriously.  When Boozer got injured last season, Kosta Koufos became a rotation player behind Millsap and Okur (Collins was injured too…those golf cart accidents can be rough) and made a few starts even though Fesenko had more time as a Jazzman.  However, as the season progressed, Boozer and the Cash Money came back from injury which took away Koufos’ minutes.  Interestingly, when spare minutes turned up towards the end of the ’08 -09 season, Fesenko started getting the nod.  What happened?  Koufos landed in the doghouse.  Why?  Koufos stopped playing Sloan ball.

Fast forward to this season.  Fesenko showed up to camp in better shape, had dropped 5% body fat, and was working hard.  It certainly seems like Sloan doesn’t hold a long-term grudge as Fesenko worked himself back into the rotation.  Where does that leave Koufos?  He’s the odd man out.  As this season progresses he’s only getting the scrap minutes.  His future is grim too.  He has a team option after next season and I have a feeling the Jazz will exercise it and cut Koufos just as they did to Morris Almond (another recent occupant of Sloan’s doghouse).

CJ Miles is the most at risk to end up in Sloan’s doghouse as his play this season (and let’s be honest, EVERY season) has been shotty.  Wesley Matthews is the team bargain right now and he has received quite a lot of praise from Sloan and the Jazz by his surprising defensive play.  Matthews might take back his minutes from Miles and if that happens, I don’t see CJ getting the nod very often.  I hope that day comes soon.
