Jazz win 5th in a row against New Orleans Hornets – 2/17/10

5 in a row on the road!! Ok, that still doesn’t sound that impressive but at least San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans, and Dallas are included in that mix. Let’s just start off by saying that the game against New Orleans was UGLY. I’m not talking John Mayer ugly. I’m talking Carrot Top on a combination of steroids, acid and 3 gallons of jager bombs. The two teams combined for 40 turnovers. Thankfully, New Orleans shot only 39% from the field and pretty much invited the Jazz to win the game even though we couldn’t get a handle on the ball all game long.
Millsap came through in a big way putting up 24 points on a scorching 85% shooting. He only missed 2 shots all night. Boozer hogged all the rebounds (15) so Millsap didn’t quite put up comparable boards to his 24 points but no matter right? Deron Williams showed signs of climbing out of the shooting hole he’s been living in for the last few weeks. While dealing with some foul trouble and playing only 28 minutes, Williams still scored 16 points on 6 of 9 from the field including drilling back-to-back 3 pointers to help shift the momentum of the game.
It’s been interesting to watch the Hornets since Chris Paul has been out. First off, the Chris Paul vs Deron Williams matchup is always a fun one to watch and I was sad that it didn’t happen in this game. Darren Collison has been starting in place of CP3 and has been putting up some impressive numbers. In the 7 games he’s started, he’s averaged 19 points and 9 assists. For a rookie, those are Rookie of the Year numbers if he could have been starting all season. It does make me start to question Chris Paul’s numbers though. I mean, clearly, New Orlean’s offensive scheme is built around CP3. He leads their team in scoring and when he’s not making baskets, he’s heavily involved in them, usually with assists. Consequently, he puts up crazy good numbers and everyone hails him as the best PG in the league. Being a Utah fan, everyone will assume that I’m being bias since most Jazz fans believe that Paul is not better than Williams. But, watching Collison put up very good numbers for a rookie makes me think that the Hornet’s system pads the stats of the point guard….whoever it is that night. Do I think Deron Williams could put up stats close to the level of Chris Paul if D-Will were playing for the Hornets? For sure. What would Chris Paul’s numbers be like on another team? He’s a great player with the ability to read the floor, make clutches passes and clutch shots but I don’t think he would be, statistically, as good.
