After 2 games the Jazz and Nuggets are tied at 1-1

// April 21st, 2010 // 1 Comment » // 2010 Playoffs

You know what?  I couldn’t be happier about that.  I would have been happy about it had Memo’s injury never happened.  Knowing now that he’s out and that the Jazz won a game in Denver, way to freaking go Jazz!

While Denver dominated the Jazz this year, I always felt like they weren’t necessarily better than us.  It seemed like they just knew how to exploit the matchup and the Jazz were slow to react.  I hope that stays the case and that the Jazz have learned a lasting lesson because Game 3 is only a couple days away.

The difference in the game wasn’t that the Jazz were missing Mehmet Okur or Fesenko as a starter, rather it was the defensive effort on Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams doing what he does best….kicking ass and taking names.

Reportedly, Matt Harpring advised the Jazz on how to defend Melo better and it involved being a lot more physical with him.  In Game 1, Melo had his way with everyone tasked to guard him.  They gave him too much space when he caught the ball and he punished the Jazz for it.

In Game 2, he rarely saw those same looks.  He attempted 25 shots in each game, making 18 in the first game and only 9 in the second.  The more physical defense is nowhere more evident than at the foul line.  In Game 2, Melo went to the line 15 times, sinking 14 of them.  In Game 1, he was 4 for 4.

Interestingly, the box score for the Jazz in Game 1 and Game 2 was almost identical.

Game 1                                                               Game 2

  • 55% FG                                                           53% FG
  • 41% 3P                                                            46% 3P
  • 75% FT                                                           77% FT
  • 31 Rebounds                                                32 Rebounds
  • 26 Assists                                                      26 Assists
  • 10 Turnovers                                               18 Turnovers
  • 4 Steals                                                            7 Steals
  • 6 Blocks                                                           4 Blocks
  • 25 Fouls                                                          30 Fouls
  • 113 Points                                                       114 Points

The difference was defense (like the NBA commercial says) and getting outrebounded by 10 boards in Game 1.

Our boy, Wesley Matthews, is going through a hard stretch in his playoff debut.  Only shooting 25% from the field and looking noticeably nervous.  Hopefully getting back to Salt Lake City will make a difference for his confidence.  His defense on Carmelo Anthony needs recognition though because despite playing very well Matthews is doing a solid job against a superstar.

CJ Miles was having a playoff breakout in Game 1 but after a collision with Chauncey Billups towards the end of the 1st half, Miles was sort of a non-factor.  In both games he tallied 17 points but was a better contributor in Game 2.  Playing better defense on Melo made a difference as well as drawing Melo’s 6th foul 60 feet away from the basket with only :25 left in the game.

What needs to happen going forward is Boozer being more aggressive.  In the first 2 games he has been settling for a lot of outside jumpers and while they fell for him he needs to stop being a wussy.  Booze only went to the free throw line twice in each game which means he’s avoiding contact.  Nene and Birdman are great shot blockers but if the Jazz want a chance to win the series they can’t rely on Boozer’s outside jumpshots.

The Jazz are not going to be able to rely on being at home for these next 2 games.  Denver proved how little that mattered by beating us at home without Billups and Melo this season.  They also proved it again by losing the the Jazz in the hostile Pepsi Center.  Energy Solutions can be a difficult place for opponents but the Jazz seem to sometimes be lulled into a false sense of security there after posting our 37-4 home record there 2 seasons ago.

The Jazz have to expect that Melo will adapt to the new defense he saw in Game 2 and adapt accordingly.  That seems to be one of the Achilles’ heel of the Jazz: adaptation.  It feels like too little too late when the Jazz do make adjustments.

Melo is too good to not be adjusting always and he’ll be certain to try and draw even more fouls against the Jazz knowing that they are going to be physical with him.

If the Jazz can win the the next 2 games at home, they’ll have a good chance at being able to upset the Nuggets and steal the series.  Come on baby

CJ Miles is Changing opinions about him

// March 10th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Player Profile

It’s been 2 weeks since a Jazz fan criticized CJ Miles’ play via Twitter.  Some people cried foul in regards to the concerned fan saying it’s not our place to criticize our favorite NBA players.  Personally, I disagree with that mentality.  Sometimes it takes us being called out (even publicly) to shock us into realizing that what we’re doing is not working.  If professional athletes are going to have Twitter accounts, they are inviting anyone and everyone to send them replies which could be anything from praise, to the harshest most racists criticisms.  Not that I’m condoning the latter…just saying that they open that door when they have a Twitter account.

Anyways, CJ’s honesty and straight-forwardness in regards to his play up to that point was refreshing.  Had he been indignant or defensive claiming that he was playing fine it would have been upsetting because clearly, up to that point in the season, he had been playing horribly.  However, he was humble and apologetic.  I’ll be honest, I’ve been critical of Miles which anyone who knows me can back up.  I feel like he has so much potential so my sentiments towards him and his game are more related to feeling like he’s not applying himself and living up to his potential.  After reading his response, I felt like I had been overly harsh towards his play.

Since then, take a look at his stats:

Min: 20/game

FG: 60%

3P: 62%

FT: 83%

PTS: 12

ST: 1

AST: 1

REB: 2

TO: 1

Those are impressive numbers for anyone.  Considering that before the Twitter incident, CJ had been shooting 40% from the floor and 30% from long range, that’s a massive jump.

There are still some downsides though.  CJ’s defense leaves a lot to desire.  He still fouls nearly uncontrollably.  He averages about 5 fouls per-40 minutes.  So if he was playing starting minutes he would be fouling out on many occasions.  Just to compare, Wesley Matthews who’s been getting more minutes than CJ, as of late, but is fouling at half the rate and only accruing less than 3 fouls per-40 minutes.

And (not trying to be a downer, just looking at both sides) CJ is still mostly a one trick pony despite having an array of basketball skills.  He can create shots and handle the ball decently but only averages just over 1 assist per game and 1 turnover making his assist/turnover ratio to be extremely poor.  He doesn’t do well setting up his teammates evidenced by his low assist numbers.  Deron Williams is a better rebounder despite playing the position (PG) that puts him farthest away from the basket.

That being said, I’m excited for CJ Miles!  He’s playing so much better lately.  I hope he keeps it up.  I still feel like he can do so much more…especially on defense.  Playing great offensively without improving your defense works if you play for the Warriors, Suns, or Knicks (and even then it doesn’t really “work”).  However, Matthews has proved that being a good defender will get you minutes and from there your offense will grow.  CJ Miles is turning over a new leaf and changing some opinions about him.  Have I become a CJ fan?  Well…let’s just say I’m optimistically fickle.

A Jazz fan (not me) calls out CJ Miles via Twitter on bad play. He responds…

I came across an interesting Twitter dialogue between a Jazz fan and the one and only CJ Miles that took place after last night’s win against the Bobcats.  After reading this, I do feel bad for CJ.  I’m glad he’s not ignorant to how things are playing out for him this season.  Some people never make that kind of admission or recognition.  Hopefully it means that he works a little harder and tries to be a little bit better.  As fans I do think we have the right to call out the players on bad play.  It definitely makes them more human when you can see that they genuinely feel bad about it and want to improve.  I thought it was funny that CJ addressed this LEaton4Jazz as “bro” seeing that it was a girl…

@LEaton4JAZZ k cj I’m not hatin on u but you are sucking! You need to spend less time in tha lab workin on rap and more time workin ur shot!

Milwaukee Bucks never had a chance vs Utah Jazz – 1/16/10

// January 17th, 2010 // No Comments » // Game Summary

0 Milwaukee Bucks never had a chance vs Utah Jazz 1/16/10

Tonight the Bucks were in town.  Sadly, they’re still reeling from having lost Michael Redd (again) to a torn ACL and MCL.  That’s rough.  The Bucks have a good, young core that, in a few years, will be competitive.  Not tonight though.  The Jazz outscored the Bucks in every quarter but the 4th and then it didn’t matter.

Quite possibly the biggest story of the night, though, was Sundiata Gaines getting only scrap time for a measly 1 minute at the very end of the game.  I can’t say I’m surprised I guess but definitely disappointed.  Jerry Sloan isn’t the type of coach to cave under pressure from media or fans and play SunnyD extended minutes after having hit the game-winning shot against the Cavaliers on Thursday.  However, every single person watching that game was baffled when the Jazz called a timeout, with a little over 2 minutes to play and up 15 points, and then did NOT let SunnyD enter the game.

After a single possession, we saw him trot to the announcer’s desk to check in.  It ended up that he played under one minute and threw up a less-than-ideal shot that didn’t go in.  Really Jerry Sloan?  How did that make sense?  Most of the time I support your hard-nosed style but give me a freakin’ break!  Something else I don’t understand goes back to a comment Sloan made after the Cavs game when asked if the Jazz were going to give SunnyD another 10-day contract, Sloan replied, “We’re going to sign him for the whole season.”  That was the right answer and the right course of action.  What did the Jazz do?  Sign Gaines to another 10-day contract.  I’m at a loss for words.  Someone please provide me an explanation that makes sense.

CJ Miles checked in during the 2nd quarter and within 15 seconds had hoisted up a hurried, contested 3 pointer and committed 2 fouls.  Hardly a good start to the game.  After that, he was golden.  He ended up 8-11 with 19 points on the night and really provided a good spark for the Jazz.  I’m usually the first to criticize CJ but tonight he played well.  We did note that he was always so quick to shoot, though.  It was as if he didn’t think he would ever get the ball again and so he had to make an impression that second.  Actually, that seems to be a trend for Miles.  It just so happened that tonight it worked out for him.  Who knows about the next game though…

Noteworthy items: The Jazz let Carlos Delfino have his career-high of 28 points tonight shooting 10-14 and 6-10 from behind the arc.  He averages 8 ppg on 38% shooting and 31% from 3.
